L.E. Willson Elementary
L.E. Willson
Elementary School houses the third through sixth grade students within
the Sheffield City School System. The school sits on the bluff of the
beautiful Tennessee River and is named for the late Col. L. E. Willson
who gave the land for the school to be built in 1960.
Facilities
Willson Elementary
School is equipped with a full-size gymnasium a 450 seat auditorium, an
automated library/media center making it one of the most unique
elementary schools in the area. There are 29 full-size classrooms and a
band room for the sixth grade and fifth grade band. The school is located
conveniently and students have access to the Sheffield Parks and
Recreation Center. The school has a fully functional elevator located on the first
floor next to the media center.
Technology
L.E. Willson has two computer labs, complete
with smart boards, students responders, and a variety of instructional software. The school also
has a "rolling lab" containing 25 laptops, which is utilized in the 21st Century afterschool program.
The Willson Elementary library is fully automated. All instructional areas have Internet access available
for teachers and students.
Accelerated Reader
Willson Elementary students began using the Accelerated Reader
Program in 1993 as a supplement to the reading program. Utilizing Accelerated Reader on-line provides access to thousands
of titles on which the students can take computerized reading comprehension tests. Fun activities are planned throughout
the year for those earning benchmark points each six weeks.
Integrated Science
Willson Elementary is a certified AMSTI
(Alabama Math, Science, Technology Initiative) school. All teachers have been trained to use hands-on
activities in Math and Science.
Language Arts
Willson Elementary places a strong emphasis on writing. For the past
nine years, Willson students have continually shown improvement on the 5th Grade Writing Assessment. Willson scores were
the second highest of all elementary schools in Colbert and Lauderdale Counties in 2008.
Mathematics
The Harcourt Math series is used in all grade levels.
Math is supplemented with AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, Technology Initiative) hands-on activities geared to
meet the Alabama Content Standards as well as to prepare students for the annual Stanford Achievement Test.
