Sheffield Junior High:
Sheffield Junior High School encompasses all of Sheffield City Schools seventh and eighth grade students. The school building is located adjacent to Sheffield High School. SJHS offers a wealth of
opportunities, providing an enriching learning environment.

Mission Statement:
The mission of Sheffield Junior High School is to develop successful, well rounded, and responsible students. This will be achieved through a challenging curriculum with the cooperative efforts of a highly motivated staff in a safe environment.

Technology:
Students and teachers have direct access to the Internet from any classroom, the library, and computer labs. A state-of-the-art computer lab is available for classroom teachers.

Science:
Seventh grade students study life science and eighth grade students study physical science. Our teachers attended special training during the summer and use many hands-on techniques from the Alabama Math and Science Initiative.

WHNT-Channel 19 and Sheffield Junior High have teamed up to present the Weathernet monitoring system. The system contains a weather tower that transmits current information to a computer link within the junior high. The Weathernet is linked to all other Weathernets across the nation. Students are combining meteorology and technology for a state of the art combination.

Mathematics:
Sheffield Junior High is an AMSTI school. Our teachers have received special training from the Alabama State Department of Education which enables them to incorporate many hands-on activities into their lessons. In addition to general math classes, we offer advance math classes. Students may take Algebra I as an eighth grader.

Language Arts:
The language arts department of Sheffield Junior High School provides a variety of learning opportunities for students while encouraging creative expression in each student. A 7-12 grade Reading Coach provides strategies for all classroom teachers to incorporate reading activities daily. Both seventh and eighth graders participate in the Accelerated Reading Program, reading a
minimum of one book per six weeks.

All language students are directed and encouraged to use resources available on classroom
computers as well as in the library to develop a higher level of competency in both
written and spoken language.

A high language class is provided for each grade where students have the opportunity to
utilize their talents and abilities for enrichment and advancement in areas of reading,
creative writing, speaking, and performing research.

Guidance and Counseling:
SJHS has a full time school counselor who is available for individual and group counseling. Our counselor conducts classroom guidance lessons in the areas of career guidance, internet safety, conflict resolution, study skills, etc.
